TL;DR: Piwik PRO is a fantastic analytics platform. And as privacy-advocates ourselves, we’re delighted to see another privacy-first solution doing well, even if the suite doesn’t comply with ePrivacy standards without a cookie banner. 

The company is however clearly posturing for enterprise clients, and subscribers to their standard package don't get access to customer support or many of their features. Paid packages are expensive and there’s the issue of the free plan being insufficient for small businesses and the paid plans being financially unviable for all but those with fat wallets.

Compared with TWIPLA, both platforms do offer website statistical analysis and offer attractive packages for enterprise clients. Still, there are some differences. Piwik PRO provides consent management and customer data modules that are absent from TWIPLA, but they don’t offer our range of visitor behavior analytics or visitor communication. Piwik PRO costs are built around website visitor event numbers while TWIPLA’s subscription milestones are pageview numbers and feature usage volume. They also have a limited white label service, their data retention policy is on the low side, and their user interface is a little complicated for some.

What is Piwik PRO?

Piwik PRO is a privacy-conscious analytics suite that also offers a Tag Manager and Consent Manager, as well as a Customer Data Platform. This makes it ideal for businesses who have been using Google Analytics but want to switch to a GDPR-compliant alternative - and particularly since the two options are very similar in terms of technical implementation.

The company was founded as Piwik in 2007 as an open-source analytics project by Mattieu Aubry and Maciej Zawadziński. By 2013, they had also released Piwik Pro as a premium alternative that would bring revenue into the organization. In 2016, Piwik Pro separated from Piwik; the original platform was officially renamed Matomo two years later, and retains the original company’s open-source principles. Today, Piwik PRO is being used by approximately 40,000 live websites, and there’s an additional 30,000 or so sites that used them in the past. Piwik PRO’s Main Modules

Piwik PRO has four main modules: 

  • Analytics: This is the main course. It’s an advanced privacy-first analytics tool that businesses can use to pull insights on the performance of their website from the perspective of both mobile and desktop users.
  • Tag Manager: This module acts as a central hub for a business’s event tags. These are snippets of code that website owners can use to collect performance data on specific website interactions that are not monitored as standard by their analytics module. The Tag Manager can also be used to enable third-party dependencies, change their site’s look and feel, and so forth.
  • Consent Manager: This module helps businesses to manage the permissions they need to collect data from customers. This data is what powers Piwik PRO’s analytics suite, and is also vital for successful, personalized remarketing work. Simply put, consent is essential if businesses are to use data in compliance with global laws. And by including a Consent Management module, Piwik PRO is doing businesses a huge favor - particularly since standalone consent management platforms can cost as much as an analytics subscription by themselves.
  • Customer Data Platform: This module is a data management system that enables users to control data input, create unified customer profiles, and further adjust audiences to different privacy choices.

 

 

Piwik PRO Awards and Reviews

Awards from software review sites are a good way to gauge product functionality. Piwik PRO has won awards from SoftwareSuggest. But away from this company, other software portals aren't displaying any badges for Piwik PRO on their websites - something that is relatively rare for an option that has been on the market for so long.

Piwik PRO reviews are good across all the main software review sites. Users find it very easy to use, and particularly for those who have migrated from Google Analytics. People like the simple interface and fast loading times, and the Consent Manager module comes particularly highly recommended. They're also a lot of love for their privacy credentials as a whole, something that saves businesses huge amounts of time and manpower.

However, there are still some common concerns, and these generally focus on the high costs involved and access restrictions for those that don’t go for the Enterprise package. This extends to customer support, which isn’t available to most users, and the Tag Manager which seems to lag behind alternatives on the market and lacks many key tags and triggers.

Users are also often disappointed by the limitation of their features. eCommerce, for instance, comes up again and again because of it's lack of key event tracking such as checkout, payment, removal from cart, etc. Custom events can also be difficult to set up for many, and it's not very easy to integrate the platform with other tools.

Next, on the Piwik PRO pricing. Piwik Pro analytics has a freemium package called Piwik PRO Core, with Piwik PRO costs coming from paid add ons. They also offer Piwik Pro Enterprise for larger websites. TWIPLA also has a premium option, as well as three paid prescription packages and a Custom Enterprise plan. Pricing: Piwik PRO Enterprise vs TWIPLA Custom Enterprise

Piwik Pro Enterprise is the plan for larger businesses. Their website advertises a starting-from price of $11,738.81 a year (or just over $978 a month) but further details are only available on request.

And since the quote submission form includes no information about how the Piwik PRO pricing structure is calculated, it’s difficult to say any more without inside information from existing users and this information is not publicly available online. However, we can assume that it’s expensive.

TWIPLA’s Custom Enterprise plan is also fully customizable. Businesses can set the number of monthly pageviews they want to analyze as well as which features and submodules they want to use, and how much. And while this level of customization means that the exact costs will also vary from client to client, we do publicize initial pricing levels that go up with the monthly pageview count that the website(s) experiences:

TWIPLA vs Piwik PRO Packages

Piwik Pro Core is their standard package. The free version enables users to analyze up to 500,000 website interactions each month, but this threshold can be increased to 5,000,000 with paid add ons.

User data is hosted within the EU and the company holds on to it for 14 months - a fairly short time period when compared with alternatives on the market. 

And unfortunately, subscribers are provided with no support or onboarding assistance beyond their community portal. Nor does this package include single sign-on (SSO), a service level agreement (SLA), or white label option.

Piwik PRO Core (Free) can be enhanced by paying for add-ons. These increase the threshold of website interactions that the platform will analyze each month. Users can pay to increase this threshold up to 5,000,000 monthly actions, after which they’d need to move up to the Piwik PRO Enterprise plan.

By contrast, TWIPLA offers three paid plans (excluding the Custom Enterprise option). These subscriptions increase the threshold of website pageviews that the platform will analyze each month, and also give users access to an increasing number of feature credits each month. Some advanced features like Custom Country Data, Company Reveal, and Visitor Segments also become available.

Piwik Pro Enterprise is the company’s flagship package, and everything about their different pricing structures suggests that they are prioritizing this customer segment.

Enterprise customers also get more offerings and customer support - something that is sorely lacking from the Piwik PRO Core plan(s).

By contrast, TWIPLA Custom Enterprise enables users to customize their required monthly pageview volume, as well as the features that they need. 

Data is hosted in the EU. Users will also benefit from TWIPLA’s Content Delivery Network, which currently includes nine data centers in strategically chosen locations around the world.

Speed of Reporting

Piwik Pro runs on ClickHouse, a database that has been designed specifically as an analytics engine. This means that the platform runs very quickly, without the lag that you can expect using alternatives like Matomo and Google Analytics.

Single-Page Applications (SPA)

Piwik Pro enables users to track SPAs. These are applications that load a single HTML page and dynamically update the content as the user interacts with the app. This approach minimizes page reloads and provides a more fluid and responsive user interface, resembling the experience of a desktop or mobile app. Examples of SPAs include Gmail, Google Maps, and Facebook. That’s Piwik PRO in a Nutshell

To summarize, Piwik PRO analytics is a great privacy-first choice for companies looking to move away from Google Analytics. Piwik PRO reviews are also generally very good, with users impressed with the ease of use. Implementation and onboarding is pretty simple, and it has most of the metrics and dimensions that they’ll be familiar with.

However, it is more geared to Enterprise clients. Piwik PRO core users can only access three of the four main modules. They also get no customer support, and a much shorter data retention period.

Even the Piwik PRO costs of the core package are a little expensive for small businesses, creating a space in their market where the free plan is too limited and the paid plans are out of reach financially.

But overall, it’s a strong analytics suite and we’re expecting big things from them in the future.
